Kok Sen Restaurant

Kok Sen is one of those old school zi char coffeeshops which has been at Keong Saik road for many years. It continued to stay popular even while the atmosphere of Keong Saik changed and numerous hip restaurants and wine / cocktail bars rose up around it.

For many years, Kok Sen was a favourite zi char haunt of mine. We would pop in for dinner before heading off to the nearby wine bars or vice versa. On one occasion, we were even allowed to take our wine with us to Kok Sen and enjoy it while having dinner, before (of course), returning the wine glasses to the bar next door. Such was the camaraderie and flexibility that we customers enjoyed.

As such, when Kok Sen made the Bib Gourmand 2016 Michelin list, it came as no surprise to many of us. A few weeks ago, we decided to make another trip back to Kok Sen (post Michelin fame)

Not surprisingly, the restaurant was crowded, but turnover was pretty fast. Unfortunately, many of the dishes we wanted were sold out. We ended up with second choices for some dishes (eg. bitter gourd braised pork ribs was not available that night) which was a bit disappointing.

Prawn Hor Fun – Hor Fun / Prawns topped with a chilli / egg sauce. This was one of the best dishes we had that night. Loved the wok hei / chill sauce combination. They were pretty generous with the prawns too.

Steamed Minced pork – second favourite dish of the night.

Prawn paste chicken – A dish which we expected to be amazing, but ended up being disappointed at. We got the prawn paste taste, but found the chicken to be rather dry underneath.

Tofu dish to balance off all the meats. We also had an additional vegetable dish to round up the table.
dscf0050 Our table generally agreed that we’ve had better tasting dishes from Kok Sen previously. Maybe it was because we couldn’t get all of our first choice dishes that night, or maybe it was because it was a very busy night. I don’t know. Thankfully, I’ve eaten here before the Michelin hype so I kind of know that the restaurant does serve pretty amazing food. Hopefully, this is just a one off situation and we will have a better experience the next time round.
