Yogyakarta: jeJamuran

This is the second post in the travel series to Yogyakarta. All other travel posts can be found here.

We came here for a late lunch after an activity filled morning when we visited Borobudur during the sunrise and the museum Ullen Sentaru shortly after. Lots of driving around, so we were pretty hungry once we arrived. jeJamuran is basically a mushroom restaurant. It serves everything mushrooms in several different ways. It’s quite the interesting concept and seems really popular. Even though we were there for a late lunch, the place was still pretty crowded.

For the curious, there is a full table of the types of mushrooms that the restaurant serves.

One of the most popular mushroom dishes here is the mushroom satay. At first glance, it does look like normal satay, but it is actually just mushrooms topped with a peanut sauce and a sweet sauce below. Two sauces on a satay! One of our favourites from the restaurant.

Indonesian traditional salad with mushrooms. We were expecting a gado-gado type of dish, but this seemed to be a totally different dish altogether. Thought this was just all right, nothing too special.

Mushroom curry! It seemed to be a mixture of straw mushrooms and oyster mushrooms in this dish.

Special mushroom fried rice. We were told by a local that one should have some Nasi Goreng (fried rice) when in Yogya. This was our chance to have some, though with some mushrooms as an added ingredient. However, though tasty, I couldn’t really say that their fried rice is the best I’ve had – found the rice grains to be a bit too moist for my liking.

D got a bit upset and frustrated that we were at a vegetarian restaurant. Luckily, jeJamuran has some meat dishes on their menu for those who need a protein fix. We had a plate of grilled chicken and duck to accompany all the mushrooms that we were having.

I must say that the concept is quite interesting, we certainly don’t have a similar restaurant in Singapore! I think my favourite dish here was definitely the mushroom satay. The peanut + sweet sauce combination was really nice.
