Den

Catch up dinner with Y and M after a long arduous summer term. It sounds like an exaggeration, but when you’re cramming 12 weeks curriculum into 4 weeks, that’s really intense! Since Y kindly allowed me to pick, I suggested trying Den, which markets itself as a European style bistro by day and a contemporary tapas and wine bar by night. I had already noticed it during my visit to FYR which is just a few doors away and had been really keen to check it out.blog photos5

Den Chicken Wings ($9) – Spicy in house glaze, crispy shallots, spring onion. These were done well. It’s quite hard to go wrong with chicken wings, though I thought that the crispy shallots gave a nice subtle crunch to the chicken.

Shortrib and mash ($18) – Braised shortribs, mash, sauteed mushrooms, garlic bread crumbs. In terms of perspective, the mash took up 60% of the plate. Being one of their most expensive tapas, one might expect a bit more protein on the plate. Having said that, the shortrib was really tender, though I thought it could have done with a bit more salt on the seasoning.

Beer cheese fries ($9) – Smoked seasoning, beer infused cheese. This also comes with crispy bacon but we requested for this ingredient to not be included so that M could enjoy it as well. Easily a table favourite. The fries were really crisp and beer infused cheese was really delicious.

Zucchini ($8) – Lemon zest, soy caviar, parmesan, toasted cashew nuts. This was a simple dish, but delicious and full of flavour. M’s favourite dish of the night. Again, this tells you that food does not need to complicated for it to taste good!

Margherita pizza ($15) – Tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, cheddar, basil oil. This was one of my favourites of the night. I think I ate almost half the pizza because it was so good.

For three of us, we spent about $20 each. Generally, we were quite happy with the food and each had our favourites. Service was very prompt and friendly, which I really appreciated a lot.

Note: Den is also featured on the entertainment app, but the staff appeared a little unsure about it when I checked with them about it. So be sure to let the staff know that you’re planning to use the app so as to prevent any potential disappointments!
